The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers an English language course organized with the Unifi Language Center.
This B2/C1 Academic English course, divided into 10 three-hour-long classes, amounts to 30 hours, and is held remotely, once a week. The material will help students to improve practical language skills needed to study and work in their fields, through reading and writing, listening and speaking activities and will be required to give a short presentation. The student will obtain a certificate, with a minimum of 80% attendance, and be allotted 2 credits (with the new system of credits valid since cycle 38), recognized as soft skills.
A wide range of materials used will cover aspects that help improve communication skills in writing and speaking, making the student more eloquent in presenting papers and confident when writing scientific materials. The teacher takes into consideration any particular areas that need attention and adapts the course accordingly. There is plenty of language work on writing paragraphs, use of discourse markers, linking and sign-posting, revision of tenses and passives, use of quantifiers, hedging, emphasis, use of the article as well as focus on academic vocabulary for describing key concepts, analysing and evaluating. Students are expected to do homework and have short writing tasks as well as a presentation to give, which the teacher sends personal feedback for.
A list of participants will be collected at the beginning of each academic year by the secretariat.
The International students can eventually attend a course of Italian Language L2 organized at the Linguistic Center of Unifi.
The student is going to pay 50 euros for enrollment for a course of 30 hours.
